Umgebauter und gealteter Pufferwagen
Ein Pufferwagen ist ein schmalspuriger Eisenbahnwagen, der sowohl über schmalspurige als auch über normalspurige Kupplungsvorrichtungen verfügt und beim Betrieb mit Rollböcken eingesetzt wird (Vorbild oben rechts im Bild).
Beim Rollbockbetrieb bilden die aufgebockten Wagen eine eigene Wagengruppe im Schmalspurzug, der mit dem schmalspurigen Teil des Zuges gekuppelt werden muss. Ursprünglich erfolgte dies mit einer langen Kuppelstange, die am einen Ende in den Kupplungshaken des Normalspurwagens mit der anderen in den Kupplungstrichter des Schmalspurwagens eingehängt war. Die Handhabung dieser Kuppelstangen war schwierig und unfallträchtig und es kam nicht selten zu Rangierunfällen, bei denen sich die höher liegenden Puffer eines Normalspurwagens in ein Schmalspurfahrzeug bohrten.
Um diesen Problemen abzuhelfen wurden vor allem in den Jahren nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg aus nicht mehr benötigten gedeckten Güterwagen Pufferwagen gebaut. Hierbei wurden die Vorder- und Rückwände des Wagens mit am Wagenkasten verschweißten Stahlplatten verstärkt, an die wiederum Kupplungshaken und Puffer angeschraubt wurden. Mit Ballastgewichten wurde das Reibungsgewicht der Wagen zusätzlich erhöht.
Mit dem Rückgang des Rollbockverkehrs wurden auch die meisten Pufferwagen überflüssig, in Deutschland gibt es nur noch wenige museal erhaltene Exemplare. Bei Bahnen, die heute noch Rollböcke einsetzen, ist meistens ein Triebfahrzeug mit den entsprechenden Kupplungseinrichtungen ausgerüstet.
Rebuilt and weathered buffer car.
A buffer car is a narrow gauge railway car, which has both narrow and standard gauge buffers and coupling devices and is used in conjunction with railroad car carrier trucks (Top right picture of prototype).
With carrier truck operation, jacked up standard gauge cars form its own group of wagons in the narrow gauge consist which must be coupled with the narrow gauge portion of the train. Originally this was done with a long coupling rod, which was mounted at one end into the coupling hook of the standard gauge car and with the other in the coupling of the narrow gauge connecting car. The handling of these connecting rods was difficult and prone to accidents and it was not uncommon to have the higher buffers of the standard gauge car pierce the end of the connected narrow gauge vehicle.
To address this issue, in the years after the second World war, buffer cars were constructed using no longer needed box cars. Here, the front and back panels of the box car were reinforced with steel plates welded to the car body, to which in turn standard gauge buffers and coupling hooks were bolted. With the decline in carrier truck operation, most buffers cars became unnecessary, and in Germany there are only a few museum-preserved units. For railroads which still use carrier truck operation today, the locomotive is usually equipped with the appropriate buffer and coupling devices. |
