In den 40er und 50er Jahren wurden in den USA einige tausend Mikado-Dampfloks für Eisenbahnen in aller Welt gebaut. Die französischen Staatsbahnen erhielten den Typ 141R in großen Stückzahlen. Noch heute kann man diese eindrucksvollen Lokomotiven bei einigen Museumsbahnen in Frankreich und in der Schweiz im Einsatz erleben.

Vorbild
Die 1D1 “Mikado” war eine der erfolgreichsten Dampflokomotiven überhaupt. Die ersten Mikados wurden 1897 von Baldwin in den USA für die schmalspurigen Eisenbahnen Japans gebaut. Im ersten Weltkrieg wurde die Achsfolge von der United States Railroad Administration (Eisenbahnverwaltung der USA) als Standard übernommen, und mehr als 1000 “Mikes” wurden für zahlreiche amerikanische Eisenbahngesellschaften und für verschiedene Bahnen in aller Welt gebaut. Als in den frühen 1950er Jahren bei der SNCF Lokmangel herrschte, wurden in den USA und Kanada die Baureihe 141R in großen Stückzahlen bestellt. Die Loks wurden im schweren Güterverkehr ebenso eingesetzt wie vor den Nacht-Expresszügen, die Paris mit dem Westen Frankreichs verbanden. Noch heute kann man einige dieser eindrucksvollen Lokomotiven auf Museumsbahnen in Frankreich und der Schweiz bewundern.

Several thousand “Mikado” steam locomotives (2-8-2) were built in the USA for railways around the world in the 1940s and 1950s. The French national railways received large numbers of class 141R. Today, you can experience these impressive locos on several museum railways in France and Switzerland.

The Prototype
The 2-8-2 “Mikados” were among the most successful steam locomotives of all time. The first Mikados were built in 1897 at the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the narrow gauge railways of Japan. During World War I, the United States Railroad Administration adopted the Mikado as its standard freight locomotive, and more than a thousand “Mikes” were delivered to more than a dozen American railways. In the early 1950s, the SNCF urgently needed large numbers of locomotives and ordered the 141R class from the United States and Canada. The locos were equally at home hauling heavy freight trains or the famous overnight express trains running from Paris to the west of France. Today, you can enjoy these great locomotives on museum railways in France and Switzerland.
