3-Truck Shay, unbeschriftet (unlettered), DC analog "DCC Ready" |
Description: |
English below
Klasse A: 2 Trucks, 2 Zylinder
Klasse B: 2 Trucks, 3 Zylinder
Klasse C: 3 Trucks, 3 Zylinder
Klasse D: 4 Trucks, 3 Zylinder

English
The "Shay" steam locomotives were developed in the 1870s by Ephraim Shay (1839 to 1916) and were used in the first half of the 20th century mainly in the North American logging industry.
Ephraim Shay began the development of a new locomotive in 1872 that was driven by gears instead of the normal coupling rods. By the end of the 1870s, Ephraim Shay was satisfied with his design and was able to convince Lima Locomotive Works in Ohio (ISA) to build a first sample which was sold to the LJ Alley umber Company in Michigan (USA) in 1880.
In June 1881, Ephrain Shay received a first patent (US Patent 242992), followed by another in 1901 for improvements to the locomotive.
The first 3-truck Shay was constructed in 1885 followed in 1903 by the 4-truck 150 ton Shay, the heaviest locomotive at that time.
Shays were then divided into four "classes":
Class A: 2 trucks, 2 cylinders
Class B: 2 trucks, 3 cylinders
Class C: 3 trucks, 3 cylinders
Class D: 4 trucks, 3 cylinders
Lima Loomotive Works in USA built Shays from 1880 to 1945, totalling over 2700 units of which over 100 still survive today with a number of these now still in service.
